United Bank of India Clerk Exam. 2010

English Language
(Exam Held on 28-11-2010)

Directions—(Q. 1–15) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words/phrases have been printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

Once upon a time there was an old man called Yugiyama, in a small village in Japan. He lived alone as his only son had gone far away to study. Yugiyama was a nice and friendly man who was liked by all the people in the village. He had a very positive view of everything that happened around him. He never grumbled or complained about anything. The villagers would often come over to the old man’s house to express their sympathy as his only son had gone far away and even at this old age he had no one to look after him and support him. They often wondered aloud if his son would ever return. As a reply to all their concerns, Yugiyama would always thank them and say, ‘‘Whatever happens, happens for the good.’’ No one ever understood why he was never sad about his son’s absence.

One day, Yugiyama’s son returned to the village after completing his education. His son had become a merchant and was earning very well. He took great care of his father. Everyone was not only amazed at Yugiyama’s luck but they were also very happy for him. Streams of villagers came over to congratulate him and like always, the old man was polite. He thanked all of them for coming over and said, ‘‘Whatever happens, happens for the good.’’

Barely a few days had passed, when one day; Yugiyama’s son fell off a horse’s back and broke his leg. Once again the entire village came over to Yugiyama’s house to express their concern and again the old man thanked them for their sympathy and said, ‘‘Whatever happens, happens for the good.’’ Some of the villagers were surprised to hear this and wondered what good could there possibly be in this situation as his son had broken a leg and old Yugiyama would have to take care of him.

A month later, the kingdom to which Yugiyama belonged and the neighbouring kingdom had a war. The king announced that they needed more young men in the army. A small troupe of the army came to the village and recruited all able-bodied young men into the army. They did not give anyone a choice. Even those who werereluctant were forced to join the army. The army leader told Yugiyama, ‘‘Your son is injured and so he will not be of any help in the battle field.’’ This they left him behind. Once again, all the villagers came to the old man’s house to congratulate him for his good luck. They said, ‘‘You are lucky that your son was not recruited. Short Method for Input Output Problems(TRICK & TIPS)

I WAS ASKED BY VARIOUS STUDENTS TO PROVIDE SHORT METHODS TO SOLVE SOME PROBLEMS IN BANK EXAMS, SO HERE I START WITH MY FIRST POST OF
SOLVING INPUT OUTPUT PROBLEMS
Consider the following problem
Input  :   Sale   data  18  23  for  95  then  38
Step I :  data  sale  18  23  for  95  then  38
Step II :  data  95  sale  18  23  for  then  38
Step III :  data  95  for  sale  18  23  then  38
Step IV :  data  95  for  38  sale  18  23  then
Step V :  data  95  for  38  sale  23  18  then
Step VI :  data  95  for  38  sale  23  then  18
And step VI is last step

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Now short approach to solve this is not to see whole pattern but directly see the last step. Generally it will arrange words according to dictionary in forward or reverse manner
and digits also in ascending or descending form. It could be any pattern given by the examiner, but in almost all cases you will be able to figure out the pattern by watching the
last step only
In this question we can see in last step that ENGLISH alphabets are in dictionary order starting from
A to Z and numbers are in descending order, so our half work is done… as we know the pattern of the arrangement i.e. first an english letter with higher order, then highest
number, then english letter in ascending number, then number just less than highest number and so on…….
One more step is to see that words are arranged in each step by shifting or swaping
Shifting : shifting means tat desire numberor alphabet comes to its place and all the words and letters are shifted as it is after that word

For eg
data  goat solo eat her zoo
now eat has to come before goat so we shift it as
data eat (goat solo her zoo) arranged as it is
Swapping : In this type one word is replaced by other one

For eg
Data goat solo eat her zoo
We swap it as
Data eat solo goat her zoo
(here eat and goat are interchanged)
Now as per the present scenario we mostly have shifting type of pattern and we have a short trick for it to find answers of question
If it is given in question that Second step of input is so and so find fifth step, so in these question instead of solving it completely, we can see that if given step is second step
so AT LEAST two words are already arranged  so look at the given stucture that if 2 or 3 or how many words are arranged after that instead of writing it step by step cut the
words with PENCIL which are arranged and then cut the next word which should come next and increase the counter of the steps i.e. step 3 in your mind, then cut next word that
should come in the arrangement and increase step counter. One thing that is to be noted that is you should not worry about the arrangement that should come after shifting
because after cutting the word in the arrangement, the uncut words will always make correct pattern after shifting.
In some cases the required word or number which is to be arranged is first letter in the first letter of the resulting arrangement, in this case we will cut tha word or number but
we will not increase the step counter as we do not have to shift it anywhere, it was already at its place
For eg
It is given that first step of the arrangement is
Data eat solo goat her zoo
Then according to the rule at least one word is already in its place i.e. data is in its correct place, now we check the next letter EAT, and we find that this too is on its correct
place so 2 letters are already arranged
Data eat solo goat her zoo (Step I)
so we first cut these words and proceed forward to check out next letter in the arrangement, and we find that next letter should be GOAT, so we cut it and increase the step
counter so it will be our Step II.
Data eat solo goat her zoo (Step II)
Then next word should be HER so we cut that letter and increase the counter by one and it becomes step number III
Data eat solo goat her zoo (Step III)
After step III we find our next letter of the arrangementwhich should be SOLO, so we will cut that letter BUT COUNTER FOR STEP NUMBER WILL NOT INCREASE because it is
already in its place. So we are still on step III.
Data eat solo goat her zoo (Step III)
After this we will look out for next letter which is ZOO, so we will cut it and this time also we will not increase the step counter as it is also on its correct place.
Data eat solo goat her zoo (Step III)
* Generally there is a question in which it is asked that step III or any step of the arrangement is so and so, then he asks any of the previous steps than step III or whichever
step is given, step I or step II in this case. In these question the answer will be CANNOT BE DETERMINED.
Explanation : For these type of question answer will be CBD as we can see in above example also that the word which is to be arranged can come from any where i.e. its
position could be anywhere in the given pattern before actual arrangement, we can see that goat comes before solo in the above example after actual arrangement, but in the
provided input it was after SOLO, so position of any word cannot be determined in previous step and hence we cannot find pattern of previous step.

think i made myself very clear with this method. Still if any1 has any query or problem then he/she can ask anytime. One thing is for sure it will save lot of your time in
reasoning section, so learn it and then practice and you will see the result soon.

Directions—(Q. 26–30) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words/phrases have been printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

At the time when the unfortunate incident of the ‘accidental’ exposure to radiation that affected workers and waste collectors in Delhi as they handled radioactive material, took place, the issue of waste disposal, particularly hazardous waste, made the headlines. The lives of those who live off collecting and sorting waste came into out line of vision. But then the issue disappeared.

Long term policies that ensure that the safety and health of those who do such an essential job – “a community of silent environmentalists” someone called them – are not such a high priority any more. One reason is that the people affected are virtually invisible.

Waste collectors around India work silently, often late into the night, sorting out mountains of waste, foraging for anything that can be sold. If you walk down some streets of Central Mumbai after 11 at night, you will see an army of waste collectors. Men, women, children are all hard at work. They work through the night and finally manage to get some sleep on the doorsteps of the shops on those streets. By daylight they become invisible, having stowed their belongings in boxes behind the signs of the shops on whose doorsteps they sleep. These are the people of the night, not noticed by those who inhabit the areas in the day.

What is often not entirely appreciated is that a substantial percentage of waste collectors is women. According to a study, 85 per cent of waste collectors in the city are women, five per cent are children and 10 per cent are men. The majority of them are poor and landless people who came to the city because of drought in their villages. The age group ranges from 7 to 70 years and 98 per cent of them are illiterate. A survey of 60,000 waste collectors found a similar proportion : 60 per cent women, 20 per cent men and 20 per cent children. Studies have revealed that 90 per cent of the women waste pickers are primary bread-winners, often widowed or deserted. It is interesting how the gender division of labour plays out even in the business of waste. While women, and children, do the more hazardous job of sorting and separating the waste, the men deal with the dry garbage, which they transport to wholesalers and factories. As a result, it is the women who are exposed to hazardous waste – none of them wear any kind of protective gear – and also face the physical problems of constantly bending and carrying head loads of the waste. Look at any group of waste collectors and you will spot the bent old women who have been performing this function for decades.

In the slum-city of Mumbai, waste collectors experience the most acute degree of homelessness. While poor people in other kinds of jobs somehow manage to find some shelter in a slum, irrespective of whether it is legal or illegal, waste collectors sleep next to the garbage they have sorted. This is their “wealth”, something they have to protect after they have collected and sorted it until they can monetize it. Hence, near many garbage dumps, even in the better off localities of cities like Mumbai, you see families of waste pickers asleep in the morning. And most often you see only women and children.

Why bring up waste collectors at a time when the main environmental issues being debated are the larger issues of global warming, or environmental disasters such as the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico ? This is because one cannot speak of the environment without considering its impact on the lives of people. We have hundreds of small-scale and continuing environmental disasters taking place all around us. But we overlook them so long as they do not impact our lives or our lifestyles. Millions of waste pickers in India, who play a crucial role in dealing with the perennial environmental crisis of waste, risk their lives and their health every single day. This is an on-going environmental issue that requires as much attention from ordinary people, the media and policy makers as the larger macro issues.

26. Why are long term policies favouring waste collectors not high priority ?
(A) The Government is currently contemplating over the effects of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and does not have time for other issues.
(B) The plight of these people is not evident as they work late into the night and are not seen much during the day.
(C) The Government is unable to see these people at all and thus is not aware of their existence.
(D) These waste collectors themselves are not in favour of being brought into the organized sector because of the numerous complications involved.
(E) As previous such favourable policies failed to improve the conditions of these waste collectors as they were not implemented effectively.
Ans : (B)

27. Which of the following is true about waste collectors as given in the passage ?
1. Majority of waste collectors are people who have migrated from their village because of some natural calamity.
2. Waste collectors prefer to sleep next to the garbage they have sorted.
3. Most waste collectors are not literate.
(A) Only (2)
(B) Only (1) and (2)
(C) Only (3)
(D) Only (2) and (3)
(E) All (1), (2) and (3) are true.
Ans : (E)

28. Why are women waste collectors at a disadvantage as compared to the men waste collectors as mentioned in the passage ?
(A) The men sell the waste collected by the women to wholesalers and keep all the money to themselves without sharing it with the women.
(B) The women do the more dangerous and physical work of sorting through the garbage whereas men mostly transport dry garbage.
(C) Men wear protective gear while sorting through the garbage thereby shielding themselves from the ill effects of being exposed to the waste.
(D) The men force their wives and children to work for them whereas the women do not have this luxury.
(E) The men are not as affected by the waste as the women waste collectors because of the difference in their physical constitution.
Ans : (B)

29. Which of the following is possibly the most appropriate title for the passage ?
(A) The General Public’s Apathetic ways
(B) The Unorganized Sector
(C) The Invisible Waste
(D) Waste Collectors – The World Over
(E) Recognizing the ‘Work’ in ‘Dirty Work’
Ans : (B)

30. Why, according to the author, is the issue of waste collectors as important as the issue of global warming ?
